Tony winner Cynthia Erivo perhaps, unsurprisingly, made an excellent host of the 78th Annual Tony Awards June 8, bringing her distinct charm and world-class vocals to Radio City Music Hall for a thoroughly entertaining ceremony. But what was going on when the CBS cameras weren't rolling?
Thanks to a certain extra special audience member (whose name rhymes with Tony-winning producer Oprah Winfrey), we know that Erivo was not only the ceremony's host, but a generous and thoughtful hostess for the night's attendees, too. In the video below, watch Erivo pass out snacks as people were waiting for the show to get going again during a commercial break. Now only one question remains: Did said snacks get eaten, or taken home as legendary mementos of a monumental night for Broadway?

The big winner of this year鈥檚 Tonys was Maybe Happy Ending. The new, original show won the night鈥檚 most coveted honor, Best Musical, which was one of its six wins of the evening, the most of any show this season. The production also made a two-time Tony winner out of its star and co-producer Darren Criss, and two-time Tony winners of both of its writers, Hue Park and Will Aronson, for both their book and score. Perhaps that 鈥渕aybe鈥 can be removed from this particular happy ending?

Wins among plays were more evenly divided. The technical marvel Stranger Things: The First Shadow unsurprisingly nearly swept the play design categories, which made it the most Tony-winning play of the season with three wins. But it was Branden Jacobs-Jenkins鈥 Purpose that took the top honor of Best Play, making Jacobs-Jenkins the first Black playwright in Broadway history to win back-to-back Tony Awards (he won in 2024 for Appropriate in the Revival of a Play category).
Revival awards went to Jamie Lloyd鈥檚 reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber鈥檚 Sunset Blvd., with that production鈥檚 already Olivier-winning star taking one of the most competitive Leading Actress in a Musical rosters in several seasons, too鈥擲cherzinger beat out six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald, both Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard of Death Becomes Her, and a star-making Broadway debut performance from BOOP! The Musical鈥檚 Jasmine Amy Rogers to win the category.
Jonathan Spector鈥檚 Eureka Day won Best Revival of a Play, a poignant win for a production whose Washington, D.C. Kennedy Center run was abruptly canceled for political reasons just weeks before Tony night. The satirical comedy explores the world of anti-vaxxers, but it looks like Tony voters were more satisfied with what it had to say than the current administration.
