History-making Tony winner Alex Newell will go it solo at the 92nd Street Y in May.
An Evening with Alex Newell will be presented at the Manhattan venue May 8 at 7:30 PM. Attendees can expect to hear such tunes as “Independently Owned� from Shucked and “Mama Will Provide� from Once on This Island.
Newell's career breakthrough came in 2011 as a runner-up on The Glee Project, which led to their role as Wade "Unique" Adams, one of TV's first prominent transgender characters, on Glee. Newell made their Broadway debut in 2017 as Asaka in the Tony-winning revival of Once on This Island, earning nominations for a Grammy and a Drama League Award.
Newell's biggest theatrical success came in 2023 when they starred as Lulu in Broadway's Shucked, subsequently becoming the first openly non-binary actor to win a Tony. That same year, they won a Drama Desk
Award for Outstanding Featured Performer in a Musical and garnered a
Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Album.
Newell was also seen as Mo, a genderfluid DJ and neighbor to the title character, in NBC's Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. Their EP is titled Power. Newell will next appear in the Paul Feig-directed Another Simple Favor, premiering on Amazon Prime Video May 1.
