Video Annette Bening Talks All My Sons, Parenting, and Finding the Right Character The Tony-nominated performer spoke with CBS Sunday Morning about her Broadway outing as a mother grappling with the fact that her son is M.I.A.

When it comes to finding great characters, Annette Bening doesn鈥檛 need to look far.

鈥淚鈥檝e been asked to do really interesting characters in the midst of great stories with great writing,鈥� she told CBS Sunday Morning. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not about playing people who are strong; it鈥檚 about finding the humanity in people.鈥�

Bening, who is currently on Broadway at the American Airlines Theatre as Kate in All My Sons, understands the tone and setting the play is in.

鈥淚 grew up in Kansas,鈥� the 2019 Tony nominee said. 鈥淢y mom鈥檚 family had two sons that went to the war鈥� they both enlisted after Pearl Harbor.鈥� Her uncle鈥檚 body was never found, paralleling her character's journey as a woman who struggles to accept that her son is M.I.A. after World War II.

Bening hasn鈥檛 been on the Great White Way since 1987, when she got her first Tony nomination for her performance in Coastal Disturbances.

Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of All My Sons runs through June 30.
