Off-Broadway News Brian d鈥橝rcy James Will Join Maya Hawke, More Off-Broadway in Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice

Les Waters will direct for the Signature Theatre.

Brian d'Arcy James and Maya Hawke

Five-time Tony nominee Brian d'Arcy James, most recently on Broadway in a Tony-nominated turn in Days of Wine and Roses, will join previously announced Stranger Things star Maya Hawke in Signature Theatre鈥檚 spring production of Spotlight Resident Sarah Ruhl鈥檚 Eurydice.

Directed by Les Waters, performances are scheduled for May 13鈥揓une 22 in Pershing Square Signature Center鈥檚 Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre.

Ruhl wrote the play for her late father, reframing the myth of Eurydice and Orpheus around Eurydice鈥檚 relationship to her father. Hawke (Asteroid City) will play the re-examined mythological character with James as her father.

The cast will also feature Caleb Eberhardt (An Enemy of the People, Choir) as Orpheus, T. Ryder Smith (Oslo, War Horse) as A Nasty Interesting Man/The Lord of the Underworld, Maria Elena Ramirez (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson) as Loud Stone, David Ryan Smith (One Man, Two Guvnors) as Big Stone; and Jon Norman Schneider (The Coast Starlight) as Little Stone.

Previously Tony-nominated for his performances as the good-natured Baker in the 2022 revival of Into the Woods, the lovable green ogre in Shrek The Musical, Shakespeare rival Nick Bottom in Something Rotten!, and desperate press agent Sidney in Sweet Smell of Success, James' Broadway credits also include Hamilton, The Ferryman, Time Stands Still, Macbeth, Next to Normal, The Apple Tree, The Lieutenant of Inishmore, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

The creative team includes two designers returning from the world premiere production nearly 20 years ago: scenic designer Scott Bradley and sound designer Bray Poor. They will be joined by costume designer Oana Botez, lighting designer Reza Behjat, hair, wig, and makeup designers Krystal Balleza and Will Vicari of The Wig Associates with casting by Caparelliotis Casting.

Eurydice marks a conclusion to Ruhl鈥檚 Signature residency, which includes the world premiere of Letters from Max, a ritual (2023); an adaptation of the 2018 epistolary book Letters from Max: A Poet, a Teacher, a Friendship by Ruhl and Max Ritvo; and the 2024 production of Orlando, adapted from Virginia Woolf鈥檚 novel.

The myth of Eurydice and Orpheus is also explored in the Tony-winning musical Hadestown, which continues at the Walter Kerr Theatre.
