Broadway's Marquis Theatre Will Dim Lights in Memory of Jan Maxwell

The Marquis Theatre, where Jan Maxwell gave her final Broadway performance (as Phyllis in Follies), will dim its marquee lights to pay tribute to the beloved stage and screen star who died February 11 at 61. The theatre will go dark February 21 at 7:45 PM for one minute.

Following the initial announcement from the Broadway League, Manhattan Theatre Club that it would also dim the lights of its Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, where Ms. Maxwell offered a Tony-nominated performance in The Royal Family in 2009 and appeared in To Be or Not to Be in 2008.

In most cases, all Broadway theatres dim their lights to celebrate the life and legacy of late theatre artists. �뵺�� has reached out to representatives for the Broadway League regarding the initial decision to dim only the Marquis.

With her last Broadway appearance, Ms. Maxwell became the fourth performer in Tony history to receive nominations in all four possible acting categories. She had previously earned nods for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Coram Boy, and, in the same season, Lend Me a Tenor and the aforementioned The Royal Family.

Her additional credits included The Sound of Music, A Doll’s House, To Be Or Not to Be, Wings, The City of Conversation, and most recently, Scenes From an Execution. During the 2015 production, Ms. Maxwell announced she would retire from stage acting. She continued to work on the small screen, making appearances in BrainDead, Gotham, and Madam Secretary.
