La MaMa Theatre has announced its lineup for 2016-17, and it will feature over 70 productions. The experimental theatre club known for its new-wave work will kick off the season with a launch party September 20, where attendees can meet and mingle with the artists, such as actress Estelle Parsons and playwright Neil LaBute.
Parsons will direct Stephen Adly Guirgis鈥� The Last Days of Judas Iscariot in March 2017 as part of the anniversary season. The play premiered at the Public Theater in 2005. This production will feature members of the Actors Studio, which is also celebrating a big anniversary this coming year: 70.
The La MaMa Puppet Series will play again this fall, September 24-November 6. The series includes an international lineup, . Man in Snow, written by Israel Horovitz, will follow November 10-27.
The winter welcomes back La MaMa鈥檚 Ada: Author Directing Author program, featuring playwrights Neil LaBute, Marco Calvani and newcomer Marta Buchaca. In February, La MaMa welcomes August Strindberg鈥檚 Miss Julie, performed by Vuelta Brava troupe of Colombia; Seon Jae Kim鈥檚 staging of Riot Antigone, a punk rock version of Antigone; and, in March, Fjeldfuglen, an Ibsen opera performed by Grusomhetens Teater of Norway.
Finally, the La MaMa Moves! annual dance festival will take place in spring 2017.
La MaMa has been awarded over 30 Obie Awards and dozens of Drama Desk Awards. Founded in 1961 by Ellen Stewart, the company is dedicated to providing resources for experimental work and artists from all over the world.
