Ford鈥檚 Theatre Society in Washington, DC, has announced the full cast and design team for its upcoming production of Edward Albee鈥檚 Who鈥檚 Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, directed by Aaron Posner. The production features Holly Twyford as Martha, Gregory Linington as George, Danny Gavigan as Nick, and Maggie Wilder as Honey.
Who鈥檚 Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is set to play January 21-February 19, 2017, at Ford鈥檚 Theatre.
鈥淢y friend Edward Albee famously said that the job of the theatre is to hold a mirror up to people. That, 鈥榠f you don鈥檛 like what you see, maybe you should change it!鈥� With Who鈥檚 Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, this is exactly what he is doing,鈥� said Ford鈥檚 Theatre director Paul R. Tetreault in a statement. 鈥淚 think it鈥檚 the greatest play ever written, and one that will provide you everything from raucous comedy all the way down to horrific tragedy.鈥�
In what is considered to be Albee鈥檚 first major play, a college professor and his wife invite a younger academic and his wife over for drinks after a late-night party, leading to an evening of sadistic games, attempted seductions, and shattering revelations. It was last seen on Broadway in 2012 at the Booth Theatre, directed by Pam MacKinnon.
鈥淚鈥檓 really excited and honored to do this project with this particular group of artists and to see how much of the truth we can bring into the play鈥檚 world,鈥� added director Posner. 鈥淚s there real darkness, difficulty, pain and cruelty in these characters? Yes. But there is also love, hope and positivity in there, too.鈥�
The production will feature scenic design by Meghan Raham, costume design by Kelsey Hunt, lighting design by Jesse Belsky, sound design and original music by Daniel Kluger, and hair and make-up design by Anne Nesmith. Leigh Wilson Smiley is the dialect coach, Casey Kaleba is the fight choreographer, Brandon Prendergast is the production stage manager, and Julia Singer is the assistant stage manager.
