Off-Broadway News Irishtown and The Black Wolfe Tone Join 2025 Irish Rep Season

Both plays will have their world premiere engagement at the Off-Broadway theatre.

Irish Repertory Theatre has announced two world premiere productions set for their spring 2025 season, both of which were developed at the Off-Broadway company.

Ciara Elizabeth Smyth's Irishtown will begin previews April 2 on Irish Rep's Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage, ahead of an April 13 opening night. The limited engagement will continue through May 25, with Nicola Murphy Dubey directing.

Irishtown follows The Irishtown Players, a celebrated Dublin-based theatre company who have just started rehearsals for a new play from a visionary playwright. But trouble arises when the actors decide she's going too dark, too experimental, and perhaps not Irish enough.

Joining Dubey on the creative team will be set and lighting designer Colm McNally, costume designer Orla Long, sound designer Caroline Eng, properties designer Nicole Rozanski, and production stage manager Michael Palmer. Casting by Katja Zarolinski of KZ Casting and will be announced at a later date. Irishtown was first presented in 2023 as part of Irish Rep鈥檚 New Works Summer Festival, and further developed in a summer 2024 workshop at Irish Rep.

The second newly announced production will be The Black Wolfe Tone, penned by Kwaku Fortune. Performances will run May 1-June 1 in Irish Rep's W. Scott McLucas Studio Theatre, with Dubey directing.

The Black Wolfe Tone interrogates the culture of silence, the mind, and growing up mixed race in Ireland. Fortune will star in the production, and a full creative team will be announced at a later date.

The work was developed in partnership with Fishamble: The New Play Company, who are co-presenting the upcoming run. Following its Irish Rep engagement, the play will be presented in Dublin.
