The previously announced Broadway debut of Stephen Schwartz and Lindsey Ferrentino's The Queen of Versailles has found its Broadway home and set dates. The musical will play the St. James Theatre, with previews beginning October 8 ahead of a November 10 opening night. A red carpet event celebrating the opening will be held November 9. Michael Arden (Maybe Happy Ending) is directing.
While expected following the piece's world premiere in Boston last year, the production has also now confirmed that Kristin Chenoweth and F. Murray Abraham will continue with the musical to Broadway. Chenoweth, who is also producing the work under her banner Diva Worldwide Entertainment, will again star as Jackie Siegel opposite Abraham's David Siegel. Additional casting, by Stephen Kopel and Carrie Gardner of C12 Casting, is to be announced.
鈥淚鈥檓 beyond excited to return to Broadway and also make my Broadway producing debut with this incredible company,鈥 says Chenoweth in a statement. 鈥淪tephen is a once-in-a-generation songwriter, and I鈥檓 so lucky we are able to reunite for this original musical, under the direction of the iconic Michael Arden, to bring Lindsey Ferrentino鈥檚 captivating story to life.鈥
The musical is adapted from Lauren Greenfield's 2012 documentary of the same name, which follows the couple's endeavor to build the largest private home in the country in Orlando, Florida, only for the 2008 recession to dampen their dreams and lavish lifestyle. The project has Chenoweth reuniting with composer-lyricist Schwartz after creating the role of Glinda in Wicked. The book is by Ferrentino. Read reviews for the Boston bow here.
The production will feature scenic and video design by Dane Laffrey, costume design by Christian Cowan, lighting design by Natasha Katz, sound design by Peter Hylenski, hair and wig design by Cookie Jordan, and orchestrations by John Clancy, all reprising their work from the Boston world premiere along with director Arden. Baseline Theatrical is serving as general manager.
Bill Damaschke, Seaview, Diva Worldwide Entertainment, and Sonia Friedman are producing.
