Irish Repertory Theatre has announced its 2016 fall season. Included in the slate will be artistic director Charlotte Moore鈥檚 adaptation of Finian鈥檚 Rainbow, starring Melissa Errico, along with the New York debut of Tony winner Brian Friel鈥檚 Afterplay and a world premiere by Laoisa Sexton.
The Off-Broadway debut of Afterplay will reunite Dermot Crowley and Dearbhla Molloy, who will play two characters from Chekhov in Friel鈥檚 one act. Joe Dowling directs. Performances are set to begin September 22 with an official opening night on September 29.
Following Irish Rep鈥檚 concert revival of Finian鈥檚 Rainbow, the musical will return as a mainstage production with Tony nominee Errico and direction by Moore. Performances are set to run October 26-December 18 with an official opening night set for November 6.
The story follows the adventures of an Irishman and his daughter who hope to strike it rich in America using a pot of gold stolen from a leprechaun. Finian鈥檚 Rainbow features music by Burton Lane, a book by E.Y. Harburg and Fred Saidy and lyrics by Harburg.
Rounding out the fall season will be the world premiere of Sexton鈥檚 The Pigeon in the Taj Mahal, directed by Alan Cox. The new work is billed as a 鈥渄arkly funny pressure cooker of a play,鈥 and will run November 16-31 with an official opening night set for November 27.
Here鈥檚 how Irish Rep describes the new play: 鈥淚n the West of Ireland, a lonely outsider is forced to live on an abandoned campsite on the barren outskirts of a seaside town. But late one night, when a lost bachelorette party discover his caravan, he finds his whole existence challenged and his home life threatened. During this long night of reckoning, amongst the glitter and the grime, a battle for survival ensues, but in these few hours can tender love save us all?鈥
