Broadway cleaned up at Hollywood's biggest night!
The 97th Annual Academy Awards, held at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and broadcast live on NBC, recognized some theatrical favorites at the March 2 ceremony. Paul Tazewell, a Tony winner for his costume design of Hamilton, took Best Costume Design for his screen work in Wicked. The Oscar win and nomination are Tazewell's first, and follow earlier wins at the British Academy Film Awards, Critics' Choice Movie Awards, American Cinematheque's Tribute to the Crafts, Black Reel Awards, and Costume Designers Guild Awards for his work on the screen version of the 2003 Broadway musical. Tonight's win makes Tazewell the first Black man to take the category in Oscars history.
Also winning from the Wicked team was Nathan Crowley, who took the Best Production Design category.
Kieran Culkin, already a Broadway alum and soon to be back on the boards in a new revival of Glengarry Glen Ross, kicked off the evening's awards winning the Supporting Actor category for his work in A Real Pain.
The evening opened with a tribute medley to the various musical versions of The Wizard of Oz, with Wicked film stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande taking on "Over the Rainbow" from the original story's 1939 MGM movie musical adaptation, "Home" from the story's 1975 disco-soul stage musical The Wiz, and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked. Wicked was up for the night's top honor鈥擝est Picture鈥攁nd both Erivo and Grande were nominated for their leading and supporting (respectively) performances as Elphaba and Glinda. The movie musical was also up for awards in the Film Editing, Original Score, Makeup and Hair Styling, Sound, and Visual Effects categories.
Also nominated from the world of theatre were Colman Domingo for his work in Sing Sing, Tony winner Ralph Fiennes for Conclave, Timoth茅e Chalamet for A Complete Unknown, Sebastian Stan for The Apprentice, and Jeremy Strong for The Apprentice.
