Classic Arts News Perhaps a Piece of Mahler鈥檚: What鈥檚 Happening in Classic Arts This Week

From S. Andrew Lloyd to Carl Maria von Weber the classic arts scene in New York is never quiet. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week.

Soprano Karen Cargill joins conductor Yannick N茅zet-S茅guin and the Philadelphia Orchestra for an all-Mahler program. Cargill will sing select songs by Alma Mahler, which the orchestra will follow up with a rendition of Gustav Mahler鈥檚 Symphony No. 7.

Soprano Rachel Willis-S酶rensen makes her Carnegie Hall debut April 9 in a recital with pianist Tamar Sanikidze. Willis-S酶rensen will sing works by Amy Beach, Rachmaninoff, Sibelius, and Strauss, as well as the world premiere of S. Andrew Lloyd鈥檚 Amaranthine.

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Kathryn Stott will perform at Carnegie Hall April 11, performing Shostakovich鈥檚 Cello Sonata in D minor, and Franck鈥檚 Violin Sonata in A Major, played on the cello. The program will also include works by Faur茅, Dvo艡谩k, S茅rgio Assad, Nadia Boulanger, and Arvo P盲rt.

Carnegie Hall will also host this week performances by the Tallis Scholars (April 8); Ensemble Connect (April 9); pianists Mitsuko Uchida and Jonathan Biss (April 9); Ensemble Modern (April 12 and April 13); and the Anat Cohen Quartetinho (April 14).

Terence Blanchard鈥檚 Fire Shut Up In My Bones returns to the stage of the Metropolitan Opera April 8. Based on the memoir by Charles M. Blow, Fire Shut Up In My Bones stars bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green as Charles, alongside sopranos Brittany Renee and Latonia Moore. Evin Rogister conducts.

Dance Theatre of Harlem performs at New York City Center April 11-14, including a special gala performance April 12 celebrating the 90th birthday of the company鈥檚 founder Arthur Mitchell. Across four performances, the company will perform works by Mitchell, as well as William Forsythe, George Balanchine, Robert Garland, and Robert Bondara.

Pianist Beatrice Rana joins the New York Philharmonic April 12-14 as the soloist for Rachmaninoff鈥檚 Piano Concerto No. 2. Manfred Honeck conducts the concerts, which also include Tchaikovsky鈥檚 Symphony No. 5, and the New York premiere of Katherine Balch鈥檚 musica pyralis, a New York Philharmonic co-commission with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Classical guitarist David Russell performs at the 92nd Street Y April 10, with a program spanning three centuries, including works by Bach, Broc谩, Kleynjans, Marcello, T谩rrega, and Torroba.

C茅cile McLorin Salvant curates a program at the 92nd Street Y April 13. Salvant will be joined by pianist Sullivan Fortner, flautist Emi Ferguson, Du拧an Balarin on theorbo and lute, bass player Yasushi Nakamura, and percussionist Keita Ogawa.
