The world premiere of Edward Einhorn's The Shylock and the Shakespeareans, a darkly humorous retelling of The Merchant of Venice,officially opened June 5 Off-Broadway at the New Ohio Theatre. Previews began June 1, and the limited engagement will run through June 17. Check out production photos below.
Jeremy Kareken stars as Jacob (called Shylock as a slur), a diamond merchant in ancient Venice. When Antonio, a member of a white supremacy group called The Shakespeareans, can't pay a debt owed to Jacob, he spreads rumors that Jacob wants him dead.
The cast also includes Craig Anderson, Ethan Fox, Janine Hagerty, Yael Haskal, Chapman Hyatt, Chase Lee, Stephanie Lichtfield, Nina Mann, Kingsley Nwaogu, Eric Oleson, and Thomas Shuman.
Set design is by Mike Mroch, lighting design by Eric Norbury, costume design by Ramona Ponce, and sound design by Becca Silbert. Richard Philbin provides live music, and Iben Cenholt is video director. Berit Johnson serves as stage manager.
Einhorn's Untitled Theater Company No. 61 produces the work. Previous works include the Havel Festival and the Ionesco Festival, as well as other Einhorn titles.
