Atlantic Theater Company has revealed casting for its rescheduled world premiere run of Abby Rosebrock's Lowcountry, now set to play the Off-Broadway company's Linda Gross Theater June 4-July 13. Opening night will be June 25, with Jo Bonney directing.
The production is part of the company's season that was initially canceled and later rescheduled following a breakdown in negotiations over contracts for backstage workers. That negotiation ended up seeing the backstage workers striking as part of their work to get their first union contract via IATSE, part of a growing Off-Broadway unionization trend.
Lowcountry will star Ted Lasso's Jodi Balfour as Tally, an under-employed actor who returns to her rural hometown and finds herself romantically linked to a high school teacher with a record. The cast will also feature Keith Kupferer as Paul and Babak Tafti as David. Casting is by The Telsey Office's Karyn Casl.
The production will have scenic design by Arnulfo Maldonado, costume design by Sarah Laux, lighting design by Heather Gilbert, sound design by John Gromada, fight choreography by Thomas Schall, and production stage management by Katie Ailinger.
The company is currently presenting Elya Smith's Grief Camp in its Linda Gross Theater through May 11, with Arjun Athalye, Maaike Laanstra-Corn, Jackie DiFalco, Alden Harris-McCoy, Ren茅e-Nicole Powell, Dominic Gross, Lark White, Danny Wolohan, and Grace Brennan starring, directed by Les Waters. Nsangou Njikam's A Freeky Introduction will make its world premiere in the company's Atlantic Stage 2 spot beginning May 16 ahead of a June 3 opening night, with performances continuing through June 22. Njikam will star as Freeky Dee, who is there to lead audiences towards freedom with a mix of poetry, ministry, and magic. Njikam will be joined by DJ Monday Blue, with Dennis A. Allen II directing.
