Stereophonic zooms in on a music
studio in 1976 as an up-and-coming rock band recording a new album
finds itself on the cusp of superstardom. The ensuing pressures
could spark their breakup鈥攐r their breakthrough.
All actors portraying band members will make the band鈥檚 music鈥攁s they achieve moments of revelation and hit countless walls in the studio鈥攍ive.
Director Aukin says, 鈥淭here鈥檚 something about David鈥檚 conceit of the recording studio as the site of a play that is so very rich鈥攕omething we have seldom seen on stage before, and certainly not with this treatment: people screaming and not being heard, people thinking they鈥檙e talking in private but being overheard. The possibilities are farcical, yet, stylistically, it couldn鈥檛 be farther from farce: it鈥檚 so natural, recalling something from a Robert Altman film, plastered with messy life, hyper-specific in its musicality.鈥
The production will also have scenic design by David Zinn, costume design by Enver Chakartash, lighting design by Jiyoun Chang, sound design by Ryan Rumery, music direction by Justin Craig, and vocal, text, and dialect coaching by Gigi Buffington.
Erin Gioia Albrecht is the production stage manager, and Andie Burns is the assistant stage manager.
