Once Broadway-aimed musical Sing Street will rise from the ashes for a U.K. premiere at London's Lyric Hammersmith Theatre this summer, playing July 8-August 23. Opening night will be July 18.
Adapted from the 2016 film of the same name written and directed by John Carney, the musical played a world premiere run Off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop in 2019, and was scheduled to transfer to Broadway's Lyceum Theatre. But then, the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown postponed that Broadway run. Sing Street did return in 2022 but it played Boston's Huntington Theatre in 2022; no new Broadway plan has yet emerged.
Press notes are describing the upcoming U.K. premiere as a "brand-new production," but much of the project's creative team remains intact from the earlier stagings. Tony winner Rebecca Taichman (Indecent) is still leading the team as director, with book writer Enda Walsh (Once), songwriter Gary Clark (Danny Wilson), choreographer Sonya Tayeh, set and costume designer Bob Crowley, co-costume designer Lisa Zinni, video designer Luke Halls, and music supervisor Peter Gordeno (Depeche Mode) all still attached. Hazel Holder will provide voice and dialect coaching.
Adam Hunter will star as Brendan, with further casting to be announced. See Hunter鈥攚ho was a featured vocalist on the original film's soundtrack鈥攑erform "Outside" from the show in the music video below.
The coming-of-age story follows 18 year-old Conor Lawlor and his schoolmates as they try to escape their troubles through music and stumble headfirst into first love. Set in 1982 Dublin, the score (which includes Clark's songs from the film along with new songs) is stepped in the new wave sound of the '80s.
鈥Sing Street has followed me throughout my career, now, to be making my live theatre debut with this beautiful stage adaptation, featuring an incredible set of songs from the movie with brand-new music for the stage is a dream," says Hunter in a statement. 鈥淭alking of new music, it has been great to work with Gary and John on premiering this brand-new track for the U.K. premiere. It鈥檚 truly a beautiful song to perform and I can鈥檛 wait to sing it in front of a live audience when we open at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre this July.鈥
