National Tour News The Music Man Will Launch 100-City National Tour in 2026

Matt Lenz will direct the Tony-winning musical in a new staging with choreography by Joshua Bergasse.

A new revival of Meredith Willson's The Music Man will embark on a national tour next year, produced by Big League Productions, Inc.

Matt Lenz (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Hairspray) will direct the 100-city tour, which is scheduled to open in Springfield, Missouri, in January 2026. Tony nominee Joshua Bergasse (Smash, On the Town) will create all-new dances for the citizens of River City.

The non-Equity production will also have scenic design by Ann Beyersdorfer, video design by Lisa Renkel, and lighting design by Tony winner Ken Billington. The tour will showcase the Broadway costumes designed by Santo Loquasto for the 2022 Broadway revival.

Casting and additional creative team members will be announced at a later date.

The Music Man opened on Broadway in 1957 starring Robert Preston and Barbara Cook. Both actors won Tony Awards for their work (the musical also nabbed the Tony for Best Musical, beating West Side Story; New Girl in Town; Oh, Captain!; and Jamaica), and Preston repeated his role in the 1962 film opposite Shirley Jones.

The classic musical follows con artist Harold Hill, who arrives in River City and falls in love with the straight-laced librarian, Marian. The score includes such Wilson tunes as "My White Knight," "Goodnight My Someone," "Lida Rose," "Till There Was You," "Seventy-Six Trombones," "Gary, Indiana," "Marian the Librarian," "The Wells Fargo Wagon," "Trouble" and "The Sadder But Wiser Girl."

A 2003 TV version featured Tony Award winners Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth. The most recent Broadway revival, which played the Winter Garden Theatre December 2021-January 2023, co-starred Tony winners Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster.
