The Twenty-Sided Tavern, the improvised quest play that let Off-Broadway audiences get in on the action, will close its Off-Broadway campaign May 11, ahead of a national tour.
The play officially opened Off-Broadway at Stage 42 May 5, 2024 after beginning previews April 19. At the time of its May 11 closure, the play will have welcomed nearly a dozen special celebrity guests, with the final slate of stars to be announced.
Relying on audience participation, each performance of The Twenty-Sided Tavern is uniquely tailored to decisions made by audience members on their phones using patented software from Gamiotics. Audience members choose which characters will appear each evening, as well as which paths they will take, and which decisions they will make along the journey. The in-mobile-browser platform does not require any special equipment, instead running on audience members' phones. The production unites Hasbro, Curious Hedgehog, Showpath Entertainment, and Wizards of the Coast to bring the tabletop adventure game to the stage.
The show premiered at The Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, later playing runs in Chicago and at Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
While the production naturally appeals to Dungeons & Dragons players, knowledge of the tabletop role-play world is not required, as the structure of the game is communicated within the show.
Created by David Andrew Laws, Sarah Reynolds, and David Carpenter, The Twenty-Sided Tavern is written by Laws. The game design is by Reynolds.
