The multi-camera comedy series Mid-Century Modern is just around the corner, and star Nathan Lane swung by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert March 11 to share a sneak peek at the series. Check out the video above.
Co-starring Matt Bomer, Nathan Lee Graham, and late Tony winner Linda Lavin, the series is set to premiere March 28. Inspired by The Golden Girls, the series follows best friends (played by Lane, Bomer, and Graham) who decide to live together after the death of a fellow friend. They share their Palm Springs residence with Lane's mother, Sybil, played by Lavin.
The cast has already become quite close, with Lane sharing with Colbert that "[Matt Bomer] is astonishingly handsome, like 24 hours a day... [he] smells like the unattainable. Like the fresh baked cookies in first class when you are riding in coach."
Lavin passed away suddenly December 29, 2024. At the time of her death, the series was not yet complete, and her passing was written into the show. "This week at Mid-Century Modern we filmed an episode I never thought we'd have to write," Mutchnik in January. "'Here's to you Mrs Schneiderman.' Saying goodbye to the character of Sybil was painful. Saying goodbye to Linda Lavin was heartbreaking."
While on Colbert, Lane also took the time to remember his former The Birdcage co-star Gene Hackman, who was Lane's favorite actor long before the pair shared the silver screen.
"It was the thrill of a lifetime to work with him," Lane recalled. "We had a scene where he and I are dancing, and we are singing 'I Could Have Danced All Night' [from My Fair Lady]. At the end, we are leaving the scene and going to dinner, and I ad-libbed. I said 'you know, I played Eliza in high school,' and he said 'I bet you were wonderful.'" Lane laughs. "Kind of a slight flirtation going on there, which was hilarious. He was one of the greats of the screen, and I was just very fortunate to get to share that time with him."
