that spotlights Liza Minnelli's life in the 1970s, will make its PBS
premiere April 1 at 9 PM ET as part of the American Masters series;
check local listings. The film will also stream.
The acclaimed documentary, which opened January 24 in New York and
January 31 in Los Angeles, is currently playing select cinemas around
the country. Get a sneak peek at the documentary, which features
archival
materials and Minnelli's own input, in the video above. In the video, Minnelli explains she seldom gets stage fright, describing the pre-show feeling more "like a racehorse before a race."
The new film follows Minnelli's life following the tragic death of her iconic mother, Judy Garland. The young actress confronts
a range of personal and professional challenges on the way to becoming
an international superstar as well. The film illuminates her
relationships with such mentors as Kay Thompson, Fred Ebb, Charles
Aznavour, Halston, and Bob Fosse with insights from colleagues and
friends Michael Feinstein, Mia Farrow, Ben Vereen, Joel Grey, and the
late Chita Rivera.
Bruce David Klein wrote, directed, and produced Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story. Alex Goldstein also produced along with co-producer Dana Craig.
Minnelli won Tony Awards for her performances in Flora, The Red Menace and The Act and was also Tony-nominated for her work in The Rink. She also received a Special Tony in 1974 "for adding lustre to the Broadway season." Her other Broadway credits include Liza's at the Palace鈥, Minnelli on Minnelli, Victor/Victoria, Chicago, and Liza.
