About the Show:

For Us, By Us is a bold, satirical, and unapologetically Black cabaret celebrating the legacy, joy, and chaos of Black musical theatre, Black culture, and Black music. Rooted in community, storytelling, and pure theatrical energy, it鈥檚 basically a cookout鈥� with Broadway vocals, R&B riffs, gospel spirit, and a little bit of organized mess.

This show is primarily for Black artists, but we are also seeking performers of color and yes鈥攚hite people, don鈥檛 be scared! We need you for the chaos (and we might need someone to sing A Whole New World or Whistle While You Work, respectfully).

For Us, By Us is meant to be joyful, soulful, and fun鈥攏ot too serious. It鈥檚 a satire, a celebration, and a love letter to Black brilliance.

Who We鈥檙e Looking For:

• Singers with strong stage presence, comedic timing, and bold, theatrical personalities
• Music Director/Accompanist (piano-based) to assist with rehearsals and live performance

Audition Details (Singers):

• Submit a 1鈥�2 min vocal video (preferably a song fitting the vibe鈥攇ospel, musical theatre, R&B, pop, soul, or country)
• Suggested song ideas: I鈥檓 Here (The Color Purple), Rise Up (Andra Day), A Change Is Gonna Come (Sam Cooke), Run and Tell That (Hairspray), Family (Dreamgirls), Jimmy鈥檚 Rap (Dreamgirls), and more.
• You can suggest a song you鈥檇 love to sing鈥攂ut note, the final set list will be curated based on everyone鈥檚 voice types and the overall show arc.
• Include a song you鈥檇 LOVE to sing and a song you would NOT want to sing.
• Optional: headshot, resume, or anything else you want to share!

Audition Details (Music Director/Accompanist):

• Submit a brief resume or description of your experience
• Let us know if you鈥檙e comfortable playing R&B, gospel, musical theatre, and/or pop styles
• Optional: share any clips or examples of past accompanying work

Rehearsals & Timeline:

• Auditions will close in May 2025
• Cast offers will be sent out after auditions are completed
• We will have at least two rehearsals in May, scheduled based on everyone鈥檚 availability
• Soundcheck will be on June 4, 2025, between 3:00鈥�4:15 PM

Additional Info:

• This is a non-union, unpaid/volunteer project for both cast and music director/accompanist.
• This is a young artist-led project designed to create community and celebrate Black excellence, culture, and music.
