Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning (JCAL) is recruiting a Program Manager for its 5th annual Meet the Playwright initiative (MTP2025).
MTP2025 presents staged readings by playwrights identifying as BIIPOC (Black, Immigrant, Indigenous, People of Color), with additional emphasis given to those that are Queens-based. Monthly from November 2025 to February 2026, the selected playwrights will present up to 40 minutes of material from a new, unproduced work for a live audience. The performance concludes with a moderated Q&A between audience, playwright, director, and creative team.
Reporting to the Director of Program Operations, the MTP2025 Program Manager serves as a liaison between the JCAL team and the playwrights. The role includes recruiting and establishing a review panel of industry professionals and managing the selection process, coordinating rehearsals, readings, and other production tasks ahead of the presentation. The Program Manager does not procure actors, directors, and/or other theater professionals for the series.
Standards and Skills:
鈥 Minimum BFA/BA in Theatre Studies, Arts Administration, or similar major;
鈥 Minimum 3 years in nonprofit arts or arts-adjacent setting, ideally at a major and/or emerging institution;
鈥 Demonstrable track record of personal and/or professional achievement in theater/dramatic arts;
鈥 Strong interpersonal and deep listening skills;
鈥 Proficiency in MS Office Suite, and all social media;
鈥 Experience operating efficiently and collaboratively within a tight-knit team.
JCAL offers $8,000 for this project-based opportunity as an independent contractor. To apply, please submit a one-page cover letter detailing your interest and qualifications; a professional resume or CV; and three professional references, with contact information.
MTP2025 is made possible through support from the Mellon Foundation, the Howard Gilman Foundation, the New York City Council and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
Founded in 1972, JCAL is a multidisciplinary urban arts center based in Southeast Queens. Our mission is to offer quality visual and performing arts programs, and to provide accessible education programs to encourage participation in the arts. We operate out of two landmark buildings: the Jamaica Arts Center, with five floors of galleries, artist studios, rehearsal spaces, flexible spaces, a studio theater and office space; and the Jamaica Performing Arts Center, a 400-seat, flexible proscenium theater with offices and other spaces. In June 2024, JCAL adopted a new five-year Strategic Plan that establishes the following core goals:
鈥 Activate JCAL as a creative home for Queens and a singular cultural anchor for New York City.
鈥 Deliver a balanced continuum of programs that 鈥渟uper-serves鈥 artists, learners, and audiences.
鈥 Build brand and reach via simple, memorable, consistent messaging amplified through deep community partnerships.
鈥 Engage, empower, resource, and equip the whole of the organization for the purpose of revenue generation.
鈥 Promote shared responsibility and leadership at every level of the organization.
JCAL, an Equal Opportunity Employer, honors the values of its board-approved Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Plan, with the goal of building and nurturing a culturally diverse, community responsive team. We warmly welcome all eligible applicants; candidates who identify as BIIPOC (Black, Immigrant, Indigenous, People of Color) are encouraged to apply.
