BREAKDOWN
TRUMAN VS ISRAEL
SYNOPSIS: Back in his Missouri family home, Harry S Truman prepares to file suit against a journalist
who characterized the former President as a bigot, racist, and anti-Semite working against the interest
of the new state of Israel. Bella Abzug, a young lawyer fresh off a crushing civil rights case defeat, is
dispatched with an enigmatic assistant to convince Truman that the risks in this case far outweigh any
rewards. Truman v Israel is an (imagined) history play about the motives we hide from others (and
ourselves) that alter the course of history.
NOTE: All ethnicities are welcomed and encouraged to audition. Every effort will be made to have a
cast that is reflective of the world we live in with regard to racial diversity and gender identification.
SEEKING:
BELLA ABZUG: early-late 30s Jewish female. The first Jewish woman elected to Congress. An
outspoken fighter for women鈥檚 rights & civil rights. She is hired to represent Harry Truman in his libel
case.
HARRY TRUMAN: 60s-70s male. Former President of the United States. Devoted family man.
Stubborn. Denies the accusations of bigotry.
DON MULLER: late 30s-50 male. An expert on the 鈥48 Arab Israeli war and Holocaust survivor.
Assists Bella on her case with Harry Truman. Simmering under the surface.
EDDIE JACOBSON: 50s-70 Jewish male. Harry Truman鈥檚 longtime friend. Organized the meeting
between Truman and Weizmann, which led to the U.S. recognition of Israel. Kind, but steely.
