John Golden Theatre

John Golden produced his namesake theatre in 1926, located at 202 W. 58th Street and designed by architect Harrison G. Wiseman. Performers such as Edward G. Robinson, Alfred Lunt, Lee Strasberg, and Stanford Meisner graced this theatre鈥檚 stage. The John Golden Theatre also showcased the 1928 production of Eugene O鈥橬eill鈥檚 Strange Interlude, starring Lynn Fontanne. Golden lost the theatre to foreclosure during the Depression, and producer John Cort took over, renaming it Cort鈥檚 58th Street. It reopened with a production of Few Are Chosen, but a series of flops and an undesirable uptown location eventually led to its demise. After several years as an ABC studio, the John Golden Theatre, then known as the Elysee, was demolished in 1985.
