Artistic Director Daniel Evans has announced Chichester Festival Theatreβs 2019 season, which kicks off in April featuring world premieres, two musicals, Shakespeare, classic revivals, and more.
Among the actors scheduled to be part of the season are Hugh Bonneville, Clare Burt, Nancy Carroll, Hadley Fraser, Sheila Hancock, Dervla Kirwan, Gerald Kyd, Josie Lawrence, James Nesbitt, Hyoie OβGrady, Amara Okereke, John Simm, and Rachael Stirling. Directors include Evans, Nicole Charles, Paul Foster, Paul Miller, Daniel Hill, Holly Race Roughan, Lucy Betts, Richard Eyre, Kate Hewitt, Rachel Kavanaugh, Dale Rooks, and Jeremy Sams.
Among the revivals are William Nicholsonβs Shadowlands, directed by Rachel Kavanaugh and starring Downton Abbeyβs Hugh Bonneville; Rachael Stirling in David Hare's Plenty, directed by Kate Hewitt; Nancy Carroll playing Hester Collyer in Terence Rattiganβs The Deep Blue Sea, directed by Paul Foster; John Simm and Dervla Kirwan in Macbeth under the direction of Paul Miller; and an immersive staging of Roy Williamsβ� Sing Yer Heart out for the Lads, directed by Nicole Charles.
The new plays include Nicholas Wright's 8 Hotels, directed by Richard Eyre, about a 1944 tour of Othello starring Paul Robeson, Uta Hagen, and JosΓ© Ferrer; Hedda Tesman, Cordelia Lynn's adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler, directed by Holly Race Roughan in a co-production with Headlong and The Lowry; and two works by Anna Ledwich: a new adaptation of Michael Morpurgoβs The Butterfly Lion, directed by Dale Rooks, and Crossing Lines, about three interconnected stories, set in 1918, 1941, and 2019, directed by Daniel Hill for the Chichester Festival Youth Theatre.
The annual festival will present two musicals, one new and one revival: Tim Firthβs This Is My Family, about a 13-year-old boy who wins a magazine competition for a dream holiday anywhere in the world, starring James Nesbitt, Sheila Hancock, and Clare Burt, under the direction of Daniel Evans; and Rodgers and Hammersteinβs classic American musical Oklahoma! with Josie Lawrence, Hyoie OβGrady, and Amara Okereke, directed by Jeremy Sams.
