Tony Awards 25 DAYS OF TONYS: How Lucas Hnath Wrote A Doll鈥檚 House, Part 2 Based on Someone Else鈥檚 Part One The Tony-nominated playwright talks about working from Henrik Ibsen鈥檚 original and why鈥攊n some ways鈥攊t was easier.

Lucas Hnath鈥檚 A Doll鈥檚 House, Part 2 picks up 15 years after the curtain falls on Henrik Ibsen鈥檚 original A Doll鈥檚 House. So what is it like to write a part two when you didn鈥檛 write part one?

鈥淓asy when the playwright in question is dead,鈥� says Hnath with a laugh.

鈥淭here鈥檚 something actually liberating about it because certain things are kind of fixed for you,鈥� he adds. 鈥淵ou know I have to put this stuff in there, but the rest is up to me. So in some ways it鈥檚 actually easier than just writing something that exists entirely on its own.鈥�

The world-premiere production just announced an extension through January 2018, and Hnath鈥檚 Tony nomination marks his Broadway debut.
