From Lincoln Center to the South Street Seaport, the classic arts scene in New York is never quiet. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week:
Starting May 10, the New York City Ballet presents a program including Jerome Robbins and Leonard Bernstein鈥檚 Fancy Free. The 1944 ballet about three sailors on shore leave looking for dates was the precursor to Robbins and Bernstein鈥檚 1949 musical On The Town. Fancy Free, Jerome Robbins鈥� first ballet, will be accompanied on the NYCB program by Robbins鈥� last ballet, choreographed to selections from Bach鈥檚 Brandenburg Concertos. The program will also include Balanchine and Stravinsky鈥檚 Agon. Starting May 12, the NYCB will also present Justin Peck鈥檚 Copland Dance Episodes, which the company premiered earlier this year.
Further downtown, On Site Opera will present Puccini鈥檚 Il Tabarro at the South Street Seaport. The waterfront will provide a veristic backdrop to the verismo tragedy about stevedores on the banks of the Seine. The production runs May 14-17.
At Carnegie Hall this week, the Oratorio Society of New York will perform Bach鈥檚 Mass in B minor, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra will perform works by Sibelius and Saariaho, and Festival Chamber Music will perform works by Beethoven, Klein, and Brahms. May 13, Carnegie Hall will present a Musical Explorers Family Concert, a 鈥渧ibrant, highly interactive concert for children鈥� aged 4-8.
May 10, pianist Yunchan Lim makes his debut with the New York Philharmonic playing Rachmaninoff鈥檚 third piano concerto. The program will also include Prokofiev鈥檚 third symphony, and Silvestrov鈥檚 Prayer for Ukraine.
May 12, the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company will present the 10th anniversary of the CrossCurrent Dance Festival at the Flushing Town Hall. The festival will include a preview of a new work by Jacek Luminski and PeiJu Chien-Pott.
May 13, Lincoln Center presents Search for Spring at the Josie Robertson Plaza. The work by Jonathan Dove and Alasdair Middleton will be performed by a community choir of 鈥渉undreds of voices.鈥�
Performances continue at the Metropolitan Opera of Aida, La Boh猫me, Champion, and Don Giovanni. May 13 will be the last performance of Champion this season.
