Liff's career as a stage manager and production stage manager included original Broadway productions of , Oliver! and many productions from the office of . Liff changed careers in the late 1960s and became an associate producer on shows including 's , and Kander & Ebb's , before switching careers again and becoming a talent agent for the William Morris Agency. He also served several terms on the Nominating Committee for the Tony Awards.
Liff was honered with Primary Stages' Dedication to New Plays Award in 2010, presented to an individual or group who have made significant contributions to the advancement of new plays. The event featured tributes by Manny Azenberg, Marvin Einhorn, and .
