Broadway's Shubert, Booth, and Palace Theatres, along with Off-Broadway TYA venue The New Victory Theatre, have been honored with 2025 Lucy G. Moses Preservation Awards, the highest honors awarded by the New York Landmarks Conservancy for excellence in preservation.
The wins will be celebrated with a ceremony April 22 at the Edison Ballroom.
鈥淭he 鈥楲ucy鈥檚鈥 celebrate amazing preservation projects from throughout the City that might otherwise remain unheralded,鈥 says Conservancy President Peg Breen in a statement. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a lively evening showcasing the vision, determination, and love people have for their historic properties.鈥
The Shubert and Booth are being honored for the restoration of their fa莽ades, which further revealed their original plaster work. More notably, the work restored the buildings' decorative sgraffito, a technique in which multiple layers of tinted plaster are applied before being scratched down in areas to reveal a multi-layered design. The removal of concrete patches and paint restored parts of the original design unseen for decades, with workers color matching the original palette to add back lost detail as well. The work resulted in what is believed to be the largest sgraffito reclamation in New York. Standing next to each other along Shubert Alley, the venues were built by the Shubert brothers in 1912 and 1913. Fa莽ade Maintenance and Design handled the restoration.
The Palace, also built in 1913, debuted a fully refurbished interior just last year, done after the entire historic venue was raised 30 feet to create new retail space below. The feat, completed by PBDW Architects, was carried out while preserving the theatre's original opulent interior, even while also improving front-of-house amenities and backstage areas.
The New Victory is the city's oldest continually operated theatre, first opening its doors in 1900. The venue recently worked with Easton Architects to restore the theatre's proscenium arch, which ultimately necessitated refurbishment of the space's ceiling dome. Over 57 days of work, fiber reinforcement was installed over the dome's flat plaster, angelic sculptures were re-secured to the dome's perimeter, and a painted canvas cove cover was installed. Lighting was also upgraded.
