Reunions of original Broadway casts are not unusual, but 2018 will kick off with a New York City event that puts a unique twist on the practice.
The children of the original cast of the 1981 Stephen Sondheim-George Furth musical Merrily We Roll Along are planning a get-together concert at Feinstein’s/54 Below to celebrate the work of their parents. Titled Our Time: The Children of Merrily We Roll Along, the show will get two performances, 9:30 PM January 2 and 3, 2018.
Names of the participants will be announced in the coming weeks.
For a show that ran only 16 performances in its original Broadway production, Merrily We Roll Along has attracted unusual fan and scholarly interest, with productions around the world (including one at New York’s Encores! that starred pre-Hamilton Lin-Manuel Miranda) that have repeatedly tried to fix what didn’t seem to work in its original production.
Based on a 1934 play of the same title by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, the musical follows three friends backward in time from 1980 to 1955, to figure out how they lost their idealism and their dreams. The original cast, which featured only young actors, many still in their teens, included Jason Alexander, Liz Callaway, Jim Walton, Lonny Price, Giancarlo Esposito, Ann Morrison, Daisy Prince, and Jim Walton.
The January 3 performance will be followed by a solo concert by original Merrily cast member Morrison, who played Mary Flynn.
