Summer in New York is a great time to catch free, open-air performances鈥攚eather permitting! Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week.
Ballet Hisp谩nico will come to Central Park鈥檚 SummerStage August 7 for a free performance featuring new and classic Ballet Hisp谩nico repertory including Pas de O鈥橣arrill and Club Havana by Pedro Ruiz, and 厂辞尘产谤别谤铆蝉颈尘辞 and House of Mad鈥檓oiselle by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. The event will also include a meet-and-greet with dancers from the company.
Bryant Park will hold its first-ever Family Day August 10, kicking off with an all-ages modern dance class with dancers from the Lim贸n Dance Company. The day will conclude with a Picnic Performance by dance companies Ephrat Asherie Dance and Barkin/Selissen Project, curated by New Victory Theater, as part of their summer series New Victory Dance.
Jonathon Heyward will lead the Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center in two concerts, closing out the orchestra鈥檚 summer season. August 6 and 7, Heyward will conduct a program including Caroline Shaw鈥檚 贰苍迟谤鈥檃肠迟别, Ralph Vaughan Williams鈥� Oboe Concerto with soloist Ryan Roberts, Marianna Martines鈥� Symphony in C Major, and Felix Mendelssohn鈥檚 Symphony No. 4. August 9 and 10, the orchestra will perform Webern鈥檚 orchestral arrangement of Bach鈥檚 鈥淩icercar a 6,鈥� the world premiere of Hannah Kendall鈥檚 He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing, Bach鈥檚 Keyboard Concerto in A Major with soloist Conrad Tao, and Schumann鈥檚 Symphony No. 2.
World Orchestra Week continues through August 7 at Carnegie Hall, showcasing youth ensembles from around the world. The final days of the festival will include the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America, the European Union Youth Orchestra with guest musicians from the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, and the Afghan Youth Orchestra.
Dance company Pilobolus鈥� three-week residency at the Joyce Theatre continues through August 11, with re:CREATION, a dynamic collection of works from the dance company鈥檚 history. The company presents 10 ballets across two programs, Dreams and Memory, including two New York City premieres of new works.
