After only nine weeks on sale, Swift's "1989" finished first in the very last tracking frame of 2014. Her new album, released through Big Machine Records, sold 3.66 million copies in 2014, according to Nielsen Music, while the "Frozen" album sold 3.53 million. (Nielsen's 2014 tracking year ran Dec. 30, 2013-Dec. 28, 2014.)
The "Frozen" soundtrack was the year-to-date top selling album of 2014 in every single tracking week of the year, except for the final frame (ending Dec. 28). In the week previous (Dec. 21), "1989" was at a total of 3.34 million compared to 3.46 million with "Frozen."
In the final week (ending Dec. 28), "1989" sold 326,000 copies while "Frozen" sold 64,000. Swift previously had the top-selling album of a calendar year in 2009 with "Fearless."
"Frozen," which features the Academy Award-winning single "Let It Go," became the highest-grossing animated film when it surpassed the $1 billion mark in March. The film features songs by and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Directed by Chris Buck ("Tarzan," "Surf's Up") and Jennifer Lee (screenwriter "Wreck-It Ralph") from a screenplay by Lee, the voice cast of the film features ("Forgetting ," The Crucible), (Wicked, If/Then), (Spring Awakening), Tony Award nominees (The Book of Mormon) and (Cinderella), (Prelude to a Kiss) and Ciar谩n Hinds (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof). The film is currently in development as a Broadway musical.
