Connecticut's Westport Country Playhouse has unveiled its upcoming 2019 programming. Featuring five productions and kicking off in the spring, the season will begin with the Tony-winning musical In the Heights, by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda with a book by Quiara Alegr铆a Hudes.
The season will also feature two critically acclaimed Off-Broadway plays, Lynn Nottage鈥檚 Mlima鈥檚 Tale and Dominique Morisseau鈥檚 Skeleton Crew, as well as the musical Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin and Moliere鈥檚 comedy Don Juan.
In the Heights, directed and choreographed by Marcos Santana, will run April 23鈥揗ay 11. Winner of four Tony Awards, the musical paints a loving portrait of New York City's vibrant Spanish-speaking community Washington Heights.
Next up will be Skeleton Crew, running June 4鈥�22. Set in a Detroit auto plant, the story centers around four factory workers navigating shifting power dynamics in their attempt to survive. A director will be announced at a later date.
Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin, with lyrics and music by Irving Berlin, book by Hershey Felder, and directed by Trevor Hay, will run July 16鈥揂ugust 3. From Czarist Russia to New York鈥檚 Lower East Side, the immigrant story features some of the composer鈥檚 most popular songs, including 鈥淕od Bless America,鈥� 鈥淧uttin鈥� on the Ritz,鈥� 鈥淭here鈥檚 No Business Like Show Business,鈥� and 鈥淲hite Christmas.鈥�
In October, the Playhouse's artistic director Mark Lamos will direct Nottage's Mlima鈥檚 Tale, the story of a magnificent elephant whose tusk is passed along the illegal ivory trail. Performances will run October 1鈥�19.
The 2019 season will culminate with Don Juan, directed by David Kennedy, playing November 5鈥�23.
