New Yiddish Rep will kick off its 2017鈥�2018 season with the Yiddish world premiere of Rhinoceros by Eugene Ionesco. 滨辞苍别蝉肠辞鈥檚 absurdist comedy, translated by Eli Rosen, will begin Off-Broadway September 7.
The Yiddish staging, directed by Moshe Yassur at the Castillo Theatre, will officially open September 14. The production will be performed in Yiddish with English supertitles through October 8.
In the allegorical Rhinoceros, Ionesco blends absurdity and the ridiculous to provide biting commentary on the human condition and one鈥檚 need to 鈥渇ollow the herd鈥�. The story follows a man who watches all of the citizens of his small town turn into rhinoceroses. The play premiered on Broadway in 1961, awarding Zero Mostel his first of three Tony Awards.
The cast of the New Yiddish Rep production will be made up of Alec Burko, Amy Coleman, Macha Fogel, Sean Griffin, Malky Goldman, Chezky Israeli, Caraid O鈥橞rien, David Mandelbaum, Eli Rosen, Luzer Twersky, and Melissa Weisz.
