The York Theatre Company production of Jerry鈥檚 Girls, the revue celebrating the musicals of Tony Award-winning composer-lyricist Jerry Herman, begins Off-Broadway performances August 5 at the York Theatre Company at Saint Peter鈥檚 (619 Lexington Avenue at 54th Street).
Directed by Pamela Hunt, Jerry鈥檚 Girls is set to run through August13 as part of the York's book-in-hand series, Musicals in Mufti.
Based on an original concept by Herman, Larry Alford, and Wayne Cilento, the show celebrates the female characters who inhabit Herman鈥檚 musicals, including Dolly Gallagher Levi of Hello, Dolly!; Auntie Mame Dennis of Mame; Countess Aurelia of Dear World; Mabel Normand of Mack and Mabel; and female impersonator ZaZa of La Cage aux Folles.
Bringing the larger-than-life characters to life for the York鈥檚 limited run are Tony Award nominee Stephanie D'Abruzzo (Avenue Q), Christine Pedi (Spamilton), and Stephanie Umoh (Ragtime). Eric Svejcar (Marry Harry) is music director.
First presented on Broadway at the St. James Theatre in 1985, Jerry鈥檚 Girls originally starred Dorothy Loudon, Chita Rivera, and Leslie Uggams.
