Six-time Tony nominee (and two-time winner) John Lithgow stopped by LIVE with Kelly to discuss his upcoming Netflix drama, The Crown.
On the October 25 episode of the morning talk show, Lithgow recalled the moment when he knew he wanted to be an actor. He told the audience that he grew up in a theatrical family but that 鈥渢he first time I really heard an audience explode with laughter鈥攐f all things I was about nine years old, and I was at scout camp and there was a big show at the end of the week,鈥� he said. (Lithgow played the Damsel in the 鈥淒amsel in Distress鈥� skit.) 鈥淚 remember hearing that sound, I鈥檝e always said if you hear enough laughter and applause at a young enough age, you鈥檙e doomed, you鈥檙e hooked, you鈥檙e going to become an actor.鈥�
Lithgow was last seen on Broadway in A Delicate Balance, opposite Glenn Close. Prior to that he appeared in Manhattan Theatre Club鈥檚 production of The Columnist, for which he earned a 2012 Tony nomination. He won Tonys in 2002 and 1973 for his performances in Sweet Smell of Success and The Changing Room, respectively.
The actor takes on Winston Churchill in The Crown, the story of Queen Elizabeth II鈥檚 ascendance to the throne. The series premieres November 4 on the streaming platform.
