A South Korean production of Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit鈥檚&苍产蝉辫;Phantom, a musical version of Gaston Leroux鈥檚 1910 novel The Phantom of the Opera, will be screened in several cities around the U.S.
Screenings are currently scheduled for May 22 at the Wilmette Theatre in Chicago, Illinois; June 30 and July 2 at the Lark Theatre in Larkspur, California; May 5 and May 8 at the Presidio Theatre in San Francisco, California; and May 8 at the Northwest Film Forum in Seattle, Washington. The film, running two hours and 57 minutes, will be presented in Korean with English subtitles.
Filmed by Wys en Scene at the Charlotte Theater in South Korea, the cast features K-Pop sensation Super Junior鈥檚 Kyuhyun, soprano Sunhae Im, and ballerina Joowon Kim.
Phantom is set in late 19th-century Paris, where Erik, a musical genius cursed with a monstrous face, lives in hiding in the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House. When he hears Christine Daa茅's angelic voice, he is determined to make her the new diva. Carlotta, the opera house's resident diva, is overcome with jealousy and devises a plan to ruin Christine's debut. Erik is enraged and takes his revenge upon her, setting in motion a series of events that leads to the revelation of his past and his tragic demise.
Yeston and Kopit previously collaborated on the Tony-winning musical Nine. Their Phantom premiered at Houston's Theatre Under the Stars in 1991. A cast album preserves the score. Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera continues at the Majestic and is now Broadway's longest-running production.
