Tony winner Lillias White will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 28th Annual NAACP Theatre Wards in Los Angeles this month. The awards from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People鈥攁 civil rights organization working towards equality and to eliminate racial hatred and discrimination鈥攁re an annual "Salute to Black Theatre" on the West Coast.
The NAACP Theatre Awards will be presented June 17 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. .
White is a Tony winner for The Life and a nominee for Fela!, as well as one of Disney鈥檚 leading ladies as the voice of Calliope in the animated feature Hercules. Other recipients at the NAACP Theatre Awards will be Oscar winner Viola Davis, who will be honored with a Trailblazer Award, and three-time Tony nominee Condola Rashad, who will receive the evening's Spirit Award.
Among the nominees for the night are Phylicia Rashad, who is nominated for her performance in Tarell Alvin McCraney's Head of Passes at Center Theatre Group (playwright McCraney and director Tina Landau are also nominated); and Colman Domingo, Robert Cary and Des McAnuff, who are nominated for Summer: The Donna Summer Musical (the Broadway musical, seen at La Jolla Playhouse, earned a total of 10 nods).
