Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda has weighed in on President-elect Donald J. Trump鈥檚 demand that the musical should apologize for lecturing Vice President-elect Mike Pence when he attended the show November 18.
At a London screening of his new film musical Moana, Miranda was asked whether he planned to apologize to Trump or Pence.
According to London newspaper , Miranda said, 鈥淣o, I don鈥檛 think there鈥檚 anything to apologize for.鈥�
Miranda reportedly continued, 鈥淚 think we tried to be as respectful as we could, and basically asked him to lead on behalf of all of us. And Mike Pence took it in that spirit.鈥�
After Trump tweeted his demand for an apology November 19, Pence said publicly that he 鈥渨asn鈥檛 offended鈥� by the speech, which was delivered from the stage during the curtain call by Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr.
The show subsequently has been the target of a boycott by Trump-Pence supporters, but it doesn't appear to be denting demand for tickets, which are sold out far in advance.
Miranda said, 鈥淥ur cast silenced the boos in the theatre and said our piece. To me, that chapter鈥檚 over. I was really grateful he came to the show and got the words in the spirit in which we intended them.鈥�
