It鈥檚 after labor day, which means the start of the fall season is upon us. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week:
The New York Philharmonic opens its 2023-24 season September 12 with West Side Story (2021) in Concert. Part of the Philharmonic鈥檚 The Art of the Score series, audiences will see a screening of Steven Spielberg鈥檚 film adaptation of the iconic musical while the orchestra plays Bernstein鈥檚 score live. The New York Philharmonic played on the 2021 film soundtrack, which included new arrangements by David Newman. Newman will return to conduct these live performances, which continue through September 17.
The Metropolitan Opera prefaces their upcoming season, officially opening September 26, with a special one-night recital by soprano Lise Davidsen, with pianist James Baillieu. The September 14 recital will include lieder by Grieg, Sibelius, Schubert, and Strauss, as well as arias from operas by Verdi, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, and K谩lm谩n. Lisa Davidsen, who in recent years has made her mark as a leading dramatic soprano, made her Met Opera debut in 2019, singing the role of Lisa in Tchaikovsky鈥檚 The Queen of Spades, and will return in the latter half of the 2023-24 season to open a new production of Verdi鈥檚 La Forza del Destino.
Accordions Around the World at Bryant Park concludes September 11 with performances from 15 different artists representing a vast range of styles including Irish folk, Argentine tango, klezmer, and more.
September 15, saxophonist Andrew Harrison and pianist Jason Low perform 鈥� Imaginary Folksongs for Saxophone and Piano鈥� at Bargemusic. The program will include works by Stephen Lias, Florence Price, Lori Laitman, Ryota Ishikawa, and Jennifer Jolley.
September 16 and 17, violinist Mark Peskanov and pianist Maureen Volk will come to Bargemusic, performing works by Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert.
