News Matilda Is a Money Maker; Broadway Musical Recoups The Tony Award-winning production Matilda The Musical, which opened on Broadway April 11, 2013, at the Shubert Theatre, has recouped its $16 million investment, producers announced Dec. 5.

Based on Roald Dahl's beloved children's book about a precocious bookworm with magical powers, Matilda premiered at 's Courtyard Theatre in November 2010 and later transferred to the West End's Cambridge Theatre, where it continues to run. The Royal Shakespeare Company and The Dodgers present the Broadway run, which began Broadway previews March 4, 2013.

Tony Award-winning director (God of Carnage, The Norman Conquests, Boeing-Boeing, La B锚te, Ghost) staged the inventive, kid-packed musical that has a book by and a score by .

Matilda received four Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical, Best Featured Actor (), Best Lighting Design and Best Scenic Design.

A national tour of Matilda will launch in May 2015 at the Ahmanson Theatre. An Australian production will open at Sydney's Lyric Theatre in August 2015. The Broadway cast features Tori Feinstein, Eliza Holland Madore, Brooklyn Shuck and Fina Strazza sharing the central role. The principal cast also features (Mrs. Phelps), Matt Harrington (Mr. Wormwood), Alison Luff (Miss Honey), (Mrs. Wormwood) and Christopher Sieber (Miss Trunchbull).

According to producers, Matilda "is the story of an extraordinary little girl who decides that despite a bad beginning filled with rotten parents, a terrifying school and a vicious head mistress, her story is going to be an astonishing one. With the help of her teacher, her friends and a little bit of imagination, Matilda proves that even if you're little, you can do big things."

The production has set and costume design by Rob Howell, with choreography by , orchestrations, additional music and musical supervision by Christopher Nightingale, lighting design by and sound design by Simon Baker.
