It used to be that you have to go to a Broadway theatre in New York to see a Broadway show. But that is no longer the case. While much of the current Broadway season is only available in person, there's still plenty of filmed theatrical experiences that you can watch at home and introduce your loved ones to.
More and more, live musicals are being filmed and subsequently made available on platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, BroadwayHD, National Theatre at Home, Disney+ and more. From Broadway hits to Hamilton and Waitress, to classic plays like Angels in America, new captures of stage productions are regularly becoming available.
Below are 25 filmed Broadway and West End shows and where to find them. This is not an exhaustive list (because services like BroadwayHD have more shows than we can reasonably name here). But this list will be continually updated with notable new shows.

Angels in America
The National Theatre's filmed productions of Angels in America Part One: Millennium Approaches and Part Two: Perestroika have been added to its streaming service, National Theatre at Home.

The production subsequently transferred to Broadway in 2018, winning Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Play and actors Lane and Garfield.

The 2021 London production of Anything Goes, starring Sutton Foster in her West End debut originally debuted on PBS. Foster reprised her Tony-winning performance as Reno Sweeney for the London staging, which was directed by Kathleen Marshall, recreating her hit Broadway production.
Foster is joined in the filmed version of Anything Goes by Tony and Olivier winner Robert Lindsay as Moonface Martin, Felicity Kendal as Evangeline Harcourt, Gary Wilmot as Elisha Whitney, Samuel Edwards as Billy Crocker, Nicole-Lily Baisden as Hope Harcourt, Haydn Oakley as Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, and Carly Mercedes Dyer as Erm.

Billy Elliot the Musical
Elton John and Lee Hall鈥檚 Billy Elliot the Musical tells the story of a little boy in a small British town who prefers ballet to boxing, much to the dismay of his conservative working-class community. When it opened on London鈥檚 West End in 2005, it became an immediate hit, winning four Olivier Awards. The production鈥檚 Broadway transfer was equally successful, winning 10 Tony Awards, including a history-making joint win for all three young actors who shared the title role.
Though the Broadway production closed in 2012, the London production ran through 2016 and was filmed live on stage in 2014. The live recording doesn鈥檛 feature the original cast, but it does include Broadway and West End star Ruthie Henshall as Mrs. Wilkinson, the ballet teacher.

Cats
Once Broadway鈥檚 longest-running musical, everybody has an opinion on this Andrew Lloyd Webber show. But what can鈥檛 be denied is that Cats is like almost no other musical to ever play the Main Stem. Based on a book of poetry by T.S. Eliot, Cats is about鈥ell, cats! The production features an iconic costume and set design by John Napier, legendary makeup design by Candace Carell, fabulous choreography by Gillian Lynne, and of course the anthem 鈥淢emory,鈥 one of the more successful songs to come from a musical in the last 40 years.
Cats wasn鈥檛 filmed on Broadway, but the original production was captured on a stage in London in 1998, with original West End star Elaine Paige鈥攚atching her as Grizabella belt "Memory" is practically a theatre kid rite of passage.

Come From Away
Come From Away tells the true story of 7,000 stranded air passengers during the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks, and the small town in Newfoundland that welcomed them. The ensemble cast take on a variety of roles, from travelers to locals to airline personnel. After opening March 12, 2017, the musical was nominated for seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
This video capture was filmed on Broadway in 2021 with a number of the original cast returning, including Jenn Colella, Petrina Bromley, Joel Hatch, Caesar Samayoa, Q. Smith, Astrid Van Wieren, and Sharon Wheatley.

Hamilton
Filmed on the stage of the Richard Rodgers Theatre in June 2016, the live capture of the Pulitzer- and Tony-winning musical was slated for an October 2021 theatrical release鈥攗ntil COVID-19 preempted that plan, resulting in the movie dropping on Disney+ July 3, 2020 (and keeping all of us sane during the pandemic). After five years of buzz, the streamed version鈥攆eaturing creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tony winners Leslie Odom Jr. and Ren茅e Elise Goldsberry, and most of the original cast鈥攍ived up to fans' expectations, and created another wave of Hamilton frenzy.

Indecent
Paula Vogel鈥檚 2017 Tony Award-nominated play has earned reverence in the theatre community for its story of a lesbian affair and artistic freedom, for its vision by director Rebecca Taichman (who won the Tony for it), and for the subtly stunning performances (notable Katrina Lenk and Adina Verson). Both Taichman and Vogel had been taken by Sholom Asch鈥檚 1923 play God of Vengeance, a love story between two women. Considered in violation of obscenity laws, productions of God of Vengeance were shut down. Indecent tracks the history of Asch鈥檚 controversial play and the risks a troupe of artists will take to perform it. In an unprecedented move, producer Daryl Roth announced the play鈥檚 closing, only to rescind the notice and extend the play for more audiences to see.

Into the Woods
Into the Woods is one of Sondheim and Lapine鈥檚 most successful Broadway shows. It鈥檚 still one of the most-produced works at schools and regional theatres across the country. This mash-up of fairytales that dares to go beyond 鈥渉appily ever after鈥 is one of Sondheim鈥檚 most accessible works, and has certainly been the Sondheim entry point for more than a few theatre fans, largely due to the video of the original Broadway production with the original Broadway cast, including Bernadette Peters and Joanna Gleason in her Tony-winning performance. Go to the wood!

The West End production was captured live in HD at London鈥檚 Adelphi Theatre, starring Olivier Award winner Matt Henry as Lola and Killian Donnelly as Charlie.

Kiss Me, Kate
With a classic Cole Porter score that includes such tunes as 鈥淎nother Op鈥檔in鈥, Another Show,鈥 鈥淪o in Love,鈥 鈥淭oo Darn Hot,鈥 鈥淎lways True to You in My Fashion,鈥 and 鈥淏rush Up Your Shakespeare,鈥 Kiss Me, Kate became an almost instant classic when it debuted on Broadway in 1948. The 1999 Broadway production won the Tony Award for Best Revival, directed by Michael Blakemore, choreographed by Kathleen Marshall and Rob Ashford, and starring Brian Stokes Mitchell and Marin Mazzie.
The 1999 revival was filmed after it transferred to London鈥檚 West End in 2003. Neither of the Broadway leads were still with the production when it was filmed, but the great news is that the filmed production showcases Brent Barrett and Rachel York, both Broadway stars in their own right.

Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill
Audra McDonald won her sixth Tony Award for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lanie Robertson鈥檚 play with music, re-imagining one of Holiday鈥檚 last performances in a run-down South Philadelphia nightclub circa 1959, just months before her death. Filmed at the Caf茅 Brasil in New Orleans, the taping echoes the aura created on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre.

Newsies
Based on the 1992 film of the same name, Disney鈥檚 Newsies tells the story of the real-life New York City newsboys strike of 1899. With a score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, the movie had long been a cult favorite, so when Disney decided to bring it to the stage with an expanded score, excitement was high. Luckily, Newsies met the hype and became a big hit on Broadway.
The Broadway production was filmed on stage during a Los Angeles stop on the national tour, and much of the original cast returned to their roles for the filming鈥攊ncluding Jeremy Jordan, Kara Lindsay, Ben Fankhauser, Andrew Keenan-Bolger, and Tommy Bracco. This recording was initially released as a limited release in movie theatres in February 2017, but a few months later it became available for digital download.

Nicholas Nickleby
The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby brought Charles Dickens鈥 novel鈥攁bout a young man who has to support his mother and sister following the death of his father鈥攖o the stage. It wasn鈥檛 an experience for the faint of heart; the complete play consisted of separate full-length parts that together made over eight hours of theatre. The show started in London, with a cast that included Roger Rees in the title role. Nicholas Nickleby did later transfer to Broadway with the London cast, winning 1982 Tony Awards for Best Play and Leading Actor in a Play for Roger Rees.
The filmed version of Nicholas Nickleby actually happened shortly before the work鈥檚 Broadway transfer, but didn鈥檛 receive its inaugural television broadcast until 1983. Given the play鈥檚 immense length, home viewing might be the best way to watch; you can take an intermission whenever you like.

The show stars Daniel Breaker, de'Adre Aziza, Eisa Davis, Colman Domingo, Chad Goodridge, and Rebecca Naomi Jones, with Stew as the narrator.

Peter Pan
J.M. Barrie鈥檚 classic story of the flying boy who never grows up has been one of the most frequently adapted stories out there since it premiered in 1904. Though there have been several musical adaptations of the story, it is the 1954 musical with a score by Moose Charlap, Jule Styne, Betty Comden, Adolph Green, and Carolyn Leigh that tends to be the best known amongst theatre fans.
This version of the story was filmed four separate times. The first three feature the musical鈥檚 original stage star, Mary Martin, in the title role, for which she won a Tony Award. Though they were not filmed on a stage, all three are faithful recreations of the original Broadway production in a television studio. The first filming, broadcast live on TV in 1955 within weeks of the show鈥檚 Broadway closing, features the complete original cast.
A revival of the show starring Cathy Rigby, the most prolific stage Peter Pan of the last 30 years, was filmed live on stage in 2000.

Present Laughter
Kevin Kline earned his third Tony Award playing Garry Essendine in a revival of No毛l Coward鈥檚 Present Laughter, which follows a few days in the life of a highly successful and egotistical actor. Appearing alongside Kline in this most recent production were an all-star cast that included Kate Burton, Kristine Nielsen, and Cobie Smulders. This 2017 production was filmed on stage before the curtain fell for the final time.
That's not the only time the show has been filmed. In 2019, Andrew Scott played the lead role of Garry at The Old Vic in London, winning him the Laurence Oliver Award for Best Actor.

Rent
Jonathan Larson鈥檚 Rent updates the story of Puccini鈥檚 La Boheme, setting it in New York City's East Village. As most theatre fans know, it made a splash on Broadway, and the level of devotion its biggest fans carried had never really been seen before. It was the first major Broadway show to offer rush tickets, and fans would camp out overnight to get inexpensive front-row tickets. The production won four 1996 Tony Awards including Best Musical, along with the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It enjoyed a run of 12 years and over 5,000 performances.
Though it was adapted into a motion picture in 2005 featuring much of the original Broadway cast, the final performance of the Broadway production was captured and shown in movie theatres, as well. At the time of the filming, the closing cast was not exceptionally well known, but looking back now, it鈥檚 pretty much a team of all-stars: Ren茅e Elise Goldsberry, Adam Kantor, Will Chase, Michael McElroy, Rodney Hicks, Tracie Thoms, Eden Espinoza, and Telly Leung.

Romeo and Juliet
This 2014 recording of the Broadway production of Romeo and Juliet, starring Orlando Bloom and Condola Rashad, was a retelling of the Shakespeare classic set in present day. In this iteration, the infamous conflict between families is racialized, as the Montagues are depicted as an all-white family, and the Capulets are shown as an all-Black family. Bloom further cemented his status as a heartthrob by playing Romeo as a motorcycle-riding romantic.

She Loves Me
You鈥檇 be hard-pressed to find a theatre aficionado who isn鈥檛 fond of She Loves Me鈥擩erry Bock, Sheldon Harnick, and Joe Masteroff鈥檚 1963 musical about two co-workers who hate each other while unknowingly being romantic pen pal partners. The score contains such favorites as 鈥淭onight at Eight,鈥 鈥淲ill He Like Me?,鈥 鈥淒ear Friend,鈥 鈥淰anilla Ice Cream,鈥 and 鈥淪he Loves Me.鈥
The 2016 Broadway revival from Roundabout Theatre Company boasted a cast that included film and TV star Zachary Levi, Tony winner Laura Benanti, Jane Krakowski (who dances up a storm), and the late Gavin Creel at his most charming. It was this production that made theatre history when it became the first Broadway show to be live streamed, and only the second to be broadcast live (following Carol Channing in Show Girl in 1961, which was broadcast live on pay-per-view TV in Canada).

Sunday in the Park With George
The original production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Sunday in the Park With George remains a particular favorite among theatre fans. Tony Straiges鈥 Tony-winning scenic design stands up over 30 years later for how brilliantly it realizes impressionist painter Georges Seurat鈥檚 iconic painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, and it doesn鈥檛 hurt that the original cast included Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin. After watching this Pulitzer-Prize-winning musical, you'll realize that "art isn't easy."

Sweeney Todd
Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler鈥檚 Sweeney Todd is regarded as a masterpiece, and with good reason: The original Broadway production won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Score. The story is a grisly tale of revenge and murder, with a famous plot twist that has the denizens of London gobbling up human flesh in the form of meat pies. Don鈥檛 let that deter you, though; Sweeney Todd is more a Victorian melodrama than a gore-filled horror-fest.
The original Broadway production, directed by Harold Prince, was filmed during its national tour. Though the complete original cast was not captured, the recording does feature Angela Lansbury (in her Tony-winning performance), Ken Jennings, and Edmund Lyndeck. Broadway replacement George Hearn stars in the title role.

Vanya
This celebrated one-man play stars Andrew Scott (Fleabag), who brings to life multiple characters in this adaptation of Chekhov鈥檚 Uncle Vanya by Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time) and directed by Sam Yates. After a sold-out 2023 run at the Duke of York's Theatre in London, Andrew Scott is headlining a limited engagement at the Lucille Lortel Theatre Off-Broadway through May 11, 2025. Though if you can't see him live, not to worry, his version of Vanya is available to stream on National Theatre at Home.
Of note: NT at Home, launched in December 2020, houses a vast selection of stage recordings, including recent productions of classic works like A Midsummer Night's Dream featuring Gwendoline Christie, Henry V with Kit Harrington, Julius Caesar with Ben Whishaw, Macbeth with Ralph Fiennes, Othello with Adrian Lester, Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, The Grapes of Wrath with Cherry Jones, and Romeo & Juliet with Josh O'Connor. Waitress
The Sara Bareilles, Jesse Nelson musical was filmed in 2021, opened on Broadway in 2016 but it was not filmed until 2021, after the show had gone on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, Bareilles herself was leading the cast on Broadway, which also included Christopher Fitzgerald in his Tony-nominated performance as Ogie, Drew Gehling as Dr. Pomatter, Charity Ang茅l Dawson as Becky, Caitlin Houlahan as Dawn, Eric Anderson as Cal, Dakin Matthews as Joe, and Joe Tippett as Earl. The 2021 return run paid tribute to the late Nick Cordero, who originated the role of Earl on Broadway and who died of complications from the COVID-19 virus.
