Patrick Page plays his final performance as Hades in the Tony-winning Hadestown December 30 at the Walter Kerr Theatre. Tom Hewitt, who reopened the production post-pandemic in September 2021 while Page finished a film commitment, will take over the role beginning January 3, 2023.
Page, Tony-nominated for his performance as Hades, lord of the underworld, has been with the musical since early readings and workshops in 2015. He starred in each developmental production, including the world premiere at NYTW (2016), Edmonton鈥檚 Citadel Theatre (2017), London鈥檚 National Theatre (2018), and on Broadway (2019).
Ana茂s Mitchell, the Tony-winning writer of Hadestown, said in an earlier statement, 鈥淧atrick鈥檚 Hades was terrifying, funny, vulnerable, even lovable. As a writer I learned so much from Patrick, about his character and about drama itself. His miraculous voice, his electrifying intelligence, and honesty will be sorely missed both on and offstage. Eternal gratitude to you, Patrick, can鈥檛 wait to see what you do next.鈥
Page added, 鈥Hadestown has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. Over the past seven years I have had a front-row seat to the genius of Ana茂s Mitchell and Rachel Chavkin as the show evolved from its initial production Off-Broadway through its Canadian and British incarnations and now, on Broadway. I will always be connected to the character of Hades in some way鈥揵ut it鈥檚 time to move on. I鈥檓 grateful beyond measure.鈥
Singer-songwriter Mitchell鈥檚 folk- and jazz-infused musical layers the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice with that of Hades and Persephone, intertwining the actions鈥攁nd consequences鈥攐f gods and mortals. Hadestown originally began as a theatrical concert performed by Mitchell.
A new initiative invites Essex County high school students to experience the world premiere of Take the Lead, a musical that highlights the impact鈥攁nd necessity鈥攐f arts education.
