Wildhorn made his Broadway debut in 1997 with , which ran for nearly four years at the Schoenfeld.

His Scarlet Pimpernel opened the same year at the Minskoff Theatre. It would close and "re-boot" twice, with changes to score and script and new lead actors, before ending its run in 2000.
