David Rothenberg celebrated the forthcoming release of his book Manhattan Mayhem March 30 at an event at Castle on 140th Street, with such luminaries as Christine Ebersole, former New Jersey governor James McGreevey, and more on hand to mark the occasion. Manhattan Mayhem, a collection of short fiction inspired by Rothenberg's nine decades of life in entertainment, releases April 2.
Hosted by Fortune Society CEO Stanley Richards, the March 30 event featured an impromptu a cappella performance of "I'll Be Seeing You" by Ebersole, and appearances from former Fortune Society CEO JoAnne Page, Casimiro Torres, Richard Hoehler, and The Fortune Society Choir.
鈥淚 began writing these short stories during the pandemic, but most of them had been floating around in my head for years,鈥 said Rothenberg in an earlier statement. "The stories are, at once, a mix of fact and fiction, most of them containing a little bit of both. My first novel, read in the third grade, was Toby Tyler or 10 Weeks in The Circus. Since then, I have always had a book in my hand or my back pocket. Reading books took me around the world. As a result, I have never been lonely. Novels, biographies, and political tracts have been my company. I hope the stories in this book will be your companion for a time."
Another celebratory event is planned for Ernie O'Malley's April 14.
The theatrical icon's storied career included working on the original production of Hair, Beyond the Fringe, Sir John Gielgud's The School for Scandal, Night of the Iguana, The Birthday Party, Blue Man Group, Tony and Tina's Wedding, and many more. Rothenberg has also been a radio host, a newspaper columnist, and politician.
