Hunter College launches its Hunter Theater Project with the Off-Broadway premiere of Richard Nelson's Uncle Vanya, an adaptation of the Chekhov play translated and directed by playwright and director Nelson. The production began performances September 7 and officially opened September 16.
Nelson's Uncle Vanya is also translated by Russian literature translators Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky.
Nelson directs a cast made up of Celeste Arias as El茅na, Alice Cannon as Ma虂rya, Jon DeVries as Alex谩nder, Kate Kearney-Patch as Mari虂na, Jesse Pennington as Mikha铆l, Jay O. Sanders as Vanya, and Yvonne Woods as Sonya.
The new translation, commissioned and first produced by San Diego's The Old Globe earlier this year, is the inaugural production of Hunter's new initiative connecting professional shows with the college's students and faculty.

Performances continue through October 14 in Hunter's 190-seat Frederick Loewe Theater.
The creative team includes Jason Ardizzone-West (scenic design), Susan Hilferty and Mark Koss (costume design), Jennifer Tipton (lighting), and Will Pickens (sound design). All performers are reprising their roles from the world premiere on the West Coast, except for Alice Cannon, who replaced Roberta Maxwell.
Nelson's Uncle Vanya debuted at The Old Globe in February.
