Abrons Arts Center and New York City Players are set to present a revival of Richard Maxwell鈥檚 2004 play Good Samaritans, which features five original songs composed by the writer and director. The staging will mark the first time in Maxwell鈥檚 20-year career that he is reviving an older work.
Performances of Good Samaritans, directed by Maxwell, will begin February 8 and continue through February 25.
The Off-Broadway engagement features original cast members Kevin Hurley and Rosemary Allen, who won an Obie Award for her performance, along with original designer Stephanie Nelson.
Good Samaritans is set in a dining hall at a rehabilitation center. The play chronicles the unconventional love story between an intake counselor in her 70s and her patient. The play premiered at St. Ann鈥檚 Warehouse, where it received critical acclaim before touring the world.
鈥淲hen I look back at the 20 plays I鈥檝e written since 1997, there鈥檚 something about Good Samaritans that holds up and perhaps feels even more resonant in 2017,鈥� commented Maxwell in a press statement. 鈥淚t鈥檚 simple and yet provokes questions about what we have access to, especially in the city. It is also theatre that doesn鈥檛 behave, that makes me smile鈥� and the characters鈥� need to connect feels as necessary as ever.鈥�
Joining Allen and Hurley are musicians James Moore (guitar) and David Zuckerman (piano). The creative team will be made up of Nelson (sets, lights, and costumes), Linda Mancini (additional costume pieces), Regina Vorria (producer), Dirk Stevens (technical director), and Louris van de Geer (stage manager).
