News See Photo of Hamlet Star Benedict Cumberbatch as "Doctor Strange" Benedict Cumberbatch, the British actor who starred in a phenomenally sold-out National Theatre production of Hamlet in London this past summer, has donned the cape and goatee of a comic book superhero for his upcoming new film, "Doctor Strange."

Entertainment Weekly posted first-look photos of Cumberbatch in costume (see one below).

As in the Marvel comics on which the film is based, Cumberbatch plays neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange, who "transforms into a sorcerer after a horrific car accident and stumbles upon a hidden world of magic," according to Variety.

Scheduled to premiere Nov. 4, 2016, "Doctor Strange" also stars Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Strange鈥檚 nemesis.

The film is being directed by Scott Derrickson, with a script by Jon Spaihts.

The Oct. 15 live international screening of Hamlet, starring Oscar nominee Cumberbatch in the title role, was seen by more than 225,000 people around the world, making it the largest global audience for any title in the history of the "National Theatre Live" broadcasts.
