News Signature Now Accepting Submissions for New Musical Theatre Lab Arlington's Signature Theatre is launching a new developmental workshop for musical theatre writers called SigWorks: Musical Theater Lab. Beginning in summer 2016, the program will develop two musicals over a two-week period, with each project receiving a public reading.

Submissions will be accepted from across the U.S., and the selected projects, under the leadership of Signature鈥檚 Director of New Works Joe Calarco, will each receive a director and assistant director, a musical director, actors, stage manager and a dramaturg. The writers of the chosen musicals will receive housing, travel and an honorarium.

"With our SigWorks: Musical Theater Lab open submission policy, we鈥檒l be giving writers all over the country the chance to have their work developed at one of America鈥檚 leading producers of new musicals," said Calarco in a press statement.

"Signature Theatre has become known as an incubator for new exciting and challenging musicals in this country over the past 25 years," added Signature Theatre artistic director . "We felt it was time to provide more opportunities to artists to help them get their work produced on American stages."

The theatre has also announced the five new plays by playwrights in the area that will receive readings as part of the SigWorks: Monday Night New Play Reading鈥檚 at Ali鈥檚 Bar series. Chosen from 91 submissions, the plays are: The Gulf by Audrey Cefaly, Br鈥檈r Cotton by Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm, Masterpieces of the Oral and the Intangible Heritage of Humanity by , Accepts with Pleasure by Dani Stoller and To Defend Freedom by Annalisa Dias. The monthly reading series, hosted at the bar in the theatre's lobby, is another new initiative that highlights and nurtures the work of regional playwrights. Each work receives a one-day developmental workshop. Each presentation will be followed by a Q & A session, running through June 2016.
