Playwright adapted the work from Marc Norman and 's screenplay. Four-time Olivier Award-winning director Declan Donnellan will recreate his U.K. staging for Stratford.
Set in Elizabethan London, the play imagines the personal romantic circumstances under which William Shakespeare might have written Romeo and Juliet.
Following its July 23, 2014, opening in the West End, the stage adaptation was embraced by London critics (). It closed in April.

Producers and Disney Theatrical Productions were reported in August 2014 by The New York Post as hoping for a Broadway transfer, although no plans have been announced. The Stratford transfer is being presented by "special arrangement" with Friedman and Disney.
Here's how it's billed: "In this imagined biography, young Will Shakespeare, tormented by writer鈥檚 block and in desperate need of a new hit, finds inspiration in the guise of passionate noblewoman Viola, who moves him to write the greatest love story of all time. The 2016 Stratford season also will include revivals of the musicals A Chorus Line and A Little Night Music. The latter will be directed by Gary Griffin.
